Myth of Holi in Nepal:

Holi, known as “Fagu Purnima” in Nepal, is a vibrant and widely celebrated festival that marks the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. The mythological origins of Holi in Nepal are deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, particularly the legend of Prahlad and Holika.

According to Hindu mythology, there was once a demon king named Hiranyakashipu who had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma, making him virtually indestructible. Hiranyakashipu’s ego grew to the extent that he demanded everyone to worship him instead of the gods. However, his own son, Prahlad, remained an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. Despite his father’s warnings and attempts to kill him, Prahlad continued to worship Vishnu, which angered Hiranyakashipu.

Hiranyakashipu sought the help of his sister, Holika, who was immune to fire, to kill Prahlad. Together, they conspired to burn Prahlad alive. Holika sat with Prahlad on her lap in a bonfire, but due to Prahlad’s unwavering devotion to Vishnu, he remained unharmed while Holika was consumed by the flames.

This mythological tale symbolizes the victory of good over evil, with Prahlad’s devotion to Vishnu ultimately prevailing. In Nepal, this story is celebrated during Holi, where people gather to perform rituals, sing and dance, and engage in the playful throwing of colored powders (known as “abeer” or “gulal”) and water.

In addition to the Prahlad and Holika legend, Holi in Nepal is also associated with the divine love between Lord Krishna and Radha. The playful activities of Krishna and his friends, who were known for throwing colored powders and water at each other, are reenacted during Holi celebrations.

Overall, the mythological roots of Holi in Nepal add depth and significance to the festival, reminding people of the triumph of good over evil, the importance of devotion, and the joy of celebrating the arrival of spring.
